The Next Generation Workplace

More people are entering the workforce who have been raised in a digital world. Let's have a look at how these people are shaping the modern workplace.

So what's changed?

The entrance of millennials to the workforce has brought a generation raised on digital technology. They work differently and have different values to previous generations.

  • Millennials will form 50% of the global workforce in 2020
  • Millennials typically have a desire to keep learning and moving quickly up through an organisation
  • 64% of millennials want to be able to work from home
  • Millennials are more driven by a good work/life balance than financial rewards
  • 71% say work demands interfere with their personal lives
  • 66% of millennials would like more flexible working hours
  • 41% say they prefer to communicate electronically at work than face to face or even over the telephone
  • 78% said that access to the technology they like to use makes them more effective at work
  • 59% believe state-of-the art technology is important to them when considering a job

But it's not all about millennials

The introduction of portable devices and the availability of the internet became a real game changer. By enabling the millennial mentality that many businesses were quick to adopt, we’ll call them digital leaders.

  • 95% of digital leaders rate digital capabilities to a far higher extent than other firms
  • 93% said they improved the quality or experience of their products or services
  • 87% of digital leaders said that investment in digital capabilities resulted in a happy & engaged workforce
  • Digital skills are generating £123 billion in performance improvements
  • 1 million jobs will be created with digital skill requirements over the next two years

How the workplace is changing

  • Cloud phone systems:
That don’t require onsite hardware, with low installation costs, that are fully redundant
  • Instant messaging:
Unified communications fulfil the want to communicate electronically
  • Password management:
With all these online systems, a password management tool makes sense
  • Flexible working:
Seamless integration of systems from office to home with a reliable internet connection
  • Always available:
Integration of different technologies feeds the need to be able to work in any place
