As the number of private sector businesses have reached a record of 5.4 million, we look at how they have grown.

  • 99% - small businesses account for 99.3% of all private sector businesses
  • 1.9 million increase in the number of businesses since 2000
  • 1 in 4 firms report revenue growth in the last three months of 2015 – the highest since 2010
  • 1.8 million combined annual turnover of SMEs
  • 47% - SMEs account for 47% of private sector turnover in the UK

The overall business population includes three main legal forms:

  • 5.3 million business population
    • 8% - 436,000 ordinary partnerships
    • 30% - 1.6 million companies
    • 62% - 3.3 million sole proprietorships

60% - small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) accounted for more than half of employment in the UK

15.6 million - the number of staff employed by SMEs
