Volunteers called for to test European broadband speeds


Volunteers have been called for to sign up for a comprehensive test of broadband speeds across Europe. The European Commission has initiated a project to measure the performance of internet connections across European Union member states and has contracted specialist firm SamKnows to carry out the study. Results will be available to regulators, broadband service providers and the public once completed and 10,000 volunteers are being sought to take part in the research.

OnLive: British broadband users embracing convergence


British broadband users are increasingly embracing convergence in their online staples. This is according to Andre Srinivasan, senior product manager for OnLive, who recently told of the "fantastic" uptake of his company's service. He explained that OnLive enables those with a broadband connection to have their games instantly streamed to any compatible device, rather than relying on a traditional console set-up.

Best practice guidelines issued for worldwide broadband connectivity


A set of best practice guidelines have been released for worldwide broadband connectivity following the ITU Global Symposium for Regulators. As part of the discussions taking place at the conference, delegates focused on wireless broadband pricing, satellite regulation, national policies, financing, recycling and protecting intellectual property rights in a digital ecosystem. Participants came to the conclusion that "smart" regulation should be enacted to promote openness and the use of incentive dynamics.

ASA 'to release new guidance for broadband providers'


The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is set to order broadband providers to offer more clarity in their adverts. According to a report from the Independent, which has acquired a leaked copy of a forthcoming report from the body, there will be stricter guidelines in terms of what speeds can be claimed. It set out rules that would enable internet service providers to advertise speeds only in cases where at least 10 per cent of customers are able to utilise such connections.

BT rolls out superfast broadband in London


BT has announced the progress of its initiative to supply homes in the UK with superfast, fibre-optic broadband. The company revealed that 400,000 homes and businesses in London are set to benefit from improved connection speeds within the coming weeks. Areas such as Primrose Hill, South Clapham and Clerkenwell are among the 30 exchange areas that will enjoy the advantages of fast broadband.
