These 4G wireless technologies would allow mobile phone users to access high-quality VoIP solutions, removing the limitations of minute-based call services, according to the technology news and reviews website. If such solutions were made widely available, consumers would pay a flat-rate for a monthly data plan that would allow them access to voice and internet services. The traditional mobile network subscription service would become redundant, as any operators that persisted with them would find themselves bypassed, with their users switching to 4G third-party VoIP apps. "Wireless carriers are eventually switching to all-VoIP services whether they like it or not," according to Brad Reed of network professionals magazine Network World However, traditional mobile subscription plans are likely to remain in place for the time bring as 4G connectivity is not expected to be widespread, even in major urban hubs, for at least the next three years. The roll-out of 4G could be the "revolutionary" catalyst for the transition of IP telephony solutions and broadband speeds to mobile devices, BroadbandIgnite said recently. The global VoIP solutions network operator market fell by 18 per cent year-on-year in 2009, but still totalled over £6.5 billion, according to the market research company. IP telephony solutions over the last 24 months have been driven by mobile network operators, who are looking to take advantage of the cost benefits that the technology can offer. Traditionally, the biggest drivers for carrier VoIP has been migration from legacy TDM networks and PSTNs (Public Switched Telephone Network) to VoIP platforms. IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), a framework for delivering IP multimedia services, will have a "strong impact" on the carrier VoIP market over the next few years, Synergy Research Group predicted. Jeremy Duke, principal analyst and founder at Synergy Research Group, said that IMS had "clearly showed its potential in 2009" due its innovative qualities and because it had become increasingly practical. IP telephony solutions of all kinds are now being taken up by both businesses and households, market intelligence company In-Stat said recently. The information technology research and advisory company reported that almost 54 million smartphones were sold in the fourth quarter of last year. Overall, 172.4 million smartphones were bought in 2009, an increase of almost 24 per cent on 2008 according to the Competitive Landscape: Mobile Devices, Worldwide, 4Q09 and 2009 report. This growth in smartphone adoption could be reflected in the uptake of mobile VoIP solutions, as smartphone handsets have the capability to utilise apps that emulate VoIP phones. Google's Android and Apple's iPhone OS were the best performers in the smartphone operating system market in 2009. Gartner expects operating systems to drive the smartphone market in 2010. Carolina Milanesi, research director at Gartner, said: "We can expect 2010 to retain a strong focus around operating systems, services and applications while hardware takes a back seat". The number of Wi-Max deployments worldwide in 2009 far outstripped deployments of LTE and HSPA, TeleGeography has said. Wi-Max has the potential to boost the availability of mobile IP telephony solutions, as networks using the technology offer fully mobile internet access. In a survey commissioned by the telecommunications company and SIRODA - a network specialist - O2 was able to take the top of the list due to it having the fastest access speeds. In January 2010 the average time taken to load a page with an O2 connection was 1.7 seconds, while for downloading music O2 was shown to be the second-fastest in four UK cities and fastest in 12 of the 20 UK key cities. The chief technology officer at O2, Derek McManus, said: "Our London customers are now seeing the benefits of the investment we made before Christmas, where we spent £30 million delivering 40 new sites." An effective, fast mobilebroadband network is a requirement for VoIP on the go, so the news will be encouraging for users who had reservations over their mobile network's ability to support VoIP traffic.
