Subscriber VoIP booming in South Korea


Subscriber Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is booming in popularity in the Asian country of South Korea, it has emerged. According to national regulator the Korea Communications Commission (KCC), the South Korean VoIP subscriber base exceeded three million at the start of March. This has grown from two-and-a-half million in December 2008 and is expected to expand even further as national telecoms carrier KT moves further towards VoIP.

The future of VoIP may be high-definition


High-definition (HD) Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) could represent the future of the industry, a leading expert claims. Jeff Pulver is launching the HD Communications Summit on May 21st in New York City to evaluate the next level of quality voice communications. Speaking to Telephony Online, he explained that HD VoIP utilises voice energy outside the three kilohertz frequency of traditional telephone calls.

New card to offer VoIP fix for gamers


A new network card has been launched to unlock the benefits of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) for video game players. The Killer Xeno from Bigfoot Networks is aimed at improving communications between computer gamers via VoIP networks. Capitalising on the growing trend for online gaming, the card enables voice chat between teams and opposing players to enhance the experience.

Mobile broadband subscribers to top 1bn by 2013


The quantity of established mobilebroadband subscribers has the potential to pass one billion by 2013, new research suggests. According to a survey by Infonetics Research, there was a 125 per cent growth in mobilebroadband subscribers during 2008 compared to 2007, helping the industry to pass 210 million users. Despite the credit crunch, this has helped global revenues for mobilebroadband providers to grow by 45 per cent to reach £34.

Digital Britain pledge 'not enough' for UK VoIP future


The government's recently unveiled universal broadband pledge is not enough to help certain companies roll-out VoIP and other rich media services in the future, an expert claims. Communications minister Lord Carter's Digital Britain report pledged to deliver broadband of a minimum speed of 2Mbps to all UK households by 2012. Rob Bamforth, principal analyst at IT analysis firm Quocirca, told Computing.
