Data not erased from devices


Data is not being erased from mobile devices, meaning those bought second-hand pose a security risk, research has found.

A study by BT, the University of Glamorgan and Edith Cowan University in Australia discovered that second-hand mobile phones and PDAs still had important company and personal information from the previous owner.

UK choosing mobile over Wi-Fi


Britons are choosing mobile broadband over Wi-Fi hotspots to access the internet while outside of the home or work, according to a recent survey.

The study by Point Topic found that mobile phone companies have increased their share of the "on-the-move" internet market to 47 per cent, compared with 42 per cent who use Wi-Fi.

SMEs behind telephony growth


Small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are fuelling growth in the European business telephony market, according to research.

A study by Frost & Sullivan has found that almost 90 per cent of new products in 2007 were aimed at this sector, defined as having fewer than 500 extensions.

Mayor wants Wi-Fi London


London should have blanket Wi-Fi internet coverage, according to the city's mayor, which would allow people to use VoIP phones all over the capital.

Boris Johnson was speaking to BBC London 94.9 and agreed that some people needed help getting online but thought the prime minister's vouchers for internet scheme was a "desperate bribe".

Ofcom publishes super-fast proposals


Proposals which aim to promote competition and investment in super-fast broadband for the UK have been unveiled by Ofcom.

The watchdog believes that this new fibre-based technology will provide speeds for homes and businesses of up to 100mbps, far faster than the 8mbps maximum speed usually seen from existing copper wires.
