IT firms turn to outsourcing in search for lower costs


More IT firms are expected to outsource work this year as they strive to reduce overheads in the current economic conditions, according to new data. Research by TPI shows a 20 per cent rise in the value of overall outsourcing contracts during the first three months of 2008. Forecasts suggest the industry will continue to expand at a similar rate over the short-term.

'Millions' hit by hidden broadband costs


Consumers are incurring costs of over £200 annually because they fail to fully understand the contractual terms imposed by broadband suppliers, according to new research. A quarter of internet users in the UK have experienced hidden costs. The most common reasons for this include failure to use direct debit, missing payment deadlines and exceeding monthly allowances.

Customer satisfaction reflects broadband speeds


Download speeds are the most important factor in determining how satisfied customers are with their broadband service, according to new research. Comparison site Top 10 Broadband found that the three fastest providers scored highest amongst consumers. Jessica McArdle, from Top 10 Broadband, said: "This report sends an indisputable message to broadband providers to speed up or face the wrath of disappointed customers.

Ofcom chief argues BBC should not pay for broadband improvements


Ofcom chief executive Ed Richards has told MPs that the BBC should not be forced to pay for updating broadband network infrastructure despite rocketing demand for its high-bandwidth iPlayer service. Speaking at a joint session of the Commons Culture, Media & Sport and Business and Enterprise committees, Mr Richards stated that contributions from content providers could help deliver high-speed broadband before arguing other methods could serve the industry better.

Competition to drive VoIP convergence


The VoIP industry will witness significant consolidation over the next year as providers compete for market share, according to a new report. Grant Thornton claims that consumers will switch from fixed-line telephony to mobile or VoIP hardware in ever increasing numbers, which in turn will drive convergence as telecommunication and IT firms attempt to capitalise on surging market demand. The research forecasts that global VoIP revenues will reach £13.
