Cable driving VoIP subscriber growth


Widespread availability of cable broadband is fueling a hosted telephony explosion in North American, according to research released today. Worldwide VoIP revenues are projected to reach $10. 4 billion in 2007, of which two-thirds originates in the US and Canada.

New security features for snom phones


Phones made by VoIP hardware specialist snom technology are to gain new security features, it has been announced. The German company has teamed up with BorderWare Technologies to offer encryption-based security on external calls. It is hoped that the new partnership will encourage both SMEs and larger corporations to invest in the purportedly spy-proof technology.

VoIP surge expected in Spain and Italy


New reports predict that there will be a surge in the uptake of VoIP systems in both Italy and Spain over the next few years. Research and Markets said that the Spanish fixed telecoms market was worth €8. 3 billion at the end of 2006, with 19.

Metro ethernet revenue to hit almost $16bn by 2010


It is expected that spending on metro ethernet equipment could reach record levels over the next three years, according to new research. Infonetics Research estimates that metro ethernet revenue will total $16 billion (£8. 01 billion) by 2010 as more companies adopt and update their current systems.

BCS honours VoIP pioneer


One of the pioneers of voice over internet protocol (VoIP) technology has been honoured by the British Computer Society (BCS). Based at the University College London, Mark Handley has been awarded the Roger Needham Award by the British Computer Society (BCS). The BCS said "Mark Handley…has fundamentally reshaped the way the internet is used on a daily basis through his seminal contributions to the engineering of the internet.
