Smartphone spread could boost VoIP traffic


Adoption of mobileIP telephony solutions could be encouraged by the volume of internet-enabled mobile phone sold last year, according to ABI Research.

Enhanced phones and smartphones accounted for around 81 per cent of global mobile handset shipments in 2009, ABI Research said.

The use of mobileIP telephony solutions could rise in 2010 as smartphone sales are set to grow substantially over the year.

According to technology market analysis company Canalys, 65.1 million smartphones will be sold in North America in 2010, a 38 per cent increase on 2009.

Smartphone sales up. VoIP phones next?


The popularity of smartphones could potentially soar in 2010, following a "remarkable" recovery at the end of last year.

The final quarter of 2009 saw 25 per cent more smartphones shipped than in the third quarter, which grew 3.6 per cent on the previous quarter, ABI Research has said.
