VoIP useful to people working outside office hours?

A growing number of people in the UK are continuing to perform tasks outside the office by making calls and sending emails when at home.

This is according to research from mobile security firm Good Technology, which claimed nine out of ten people do not stop working when they leave the office at 5pm.

The study found the average individual puts in three and a half hours of overtime every week at home and when commuting, equating to 23 extra working days a year.

As a result of this, many workers may benefit from communication technologies such as VoIP, which can allow them to easily keep in touch with colleagues and clients even if they are outside the office.

Plus, as conversations take place over the internet, it may be considerably cheaper than using a traditional landline or mobile device to make a call, which could be valuable to workers who are on their own time.

In addition to making and answering calls, common tasks performed outside of normal working hours include checking and responding to emails, with two-thirds logging into their inbox before 7am, while 15 per cent can still be expected to respond to messages after 10pm.

A third of people will check for new correspondence on a Saturday morning and three out of ten will continue doing their job while sat at the dinner table.

While half of people said working outside of the office is necessary in order to stay organised, one in five admitted they do this because they want to impress their boss.

General manager of Good Technology Andy Jacques said: "With today's 'always on' society, Brits are pretty much working, or at least thinking about work, from the moment they wake up until the moment they fall asleep at the end of the day."

Product specialist at Telappliant Ershad Islam recently observed more people may be able to use VoIP technology to take calls while on the move, as mobile VoIP has begun to take off, with the technology being implemented into more smartphones and tablets.
