VoIP has, for many, already transformed telecommunications within the office environment. Allowing cheap calls - particularly to international recipients - means businesses can save money and enjoy efficiency gains.

It is also a highly reliable platform that is ideal for users that depend on quality and clarity when making calls.

With this in mind, it is perhaps unsurprising to find out that mobile VoIP has also been enjoying a boom in popularity, with many firms kitting out their staff with handsets that are capable of making calls over the web.

A new report by Research and Markets explores the sector and concludes that mobile VoIP usage is "on the rise". It puts this down to several factors, not least the increasing adoption of smartphones among UK consumers. Everybody is only too aware of the role hi-tech devices are playing in everybody's lives these days, so making the most of the handsets to enjoy cheap and efficient calls is a wise move.

Another factor in the rise of mobile VoIP is the growing number of tools and applications that are being provided to users.

Research and Markets noted that the potential audience for the technology is growing and this is attracting more technology providers to the market. Indeed, it is notable that more solutions, more products and more services are being unveiled on a regular basis.

The research body has released a new report entitled Mobile VoIP 2012: Mobile Operators Provide a Guarded Embrace, which delves into the topic on a more in-depth level. It also allows readers to determine exactly where the most prolific and numerous mobile VoIP users are located.

Gadjo Cardenas Sevilla of WhatsYourTech.ca, writing a piece for the Calgary Herald, recently suggested it is possible to rely on VoIP to completely replace landlines. It might just be that a growing reliance on mobiles makes this an even more feasible plan.
