The rise of VoIP has been hugely beneficial to companies across the world, providing them with a way to make cheap calls to recipients based overseas. Whereas traditional telephone lines might leave users running up a substantial bill should they wish to talk to foreign colleagues or clients, running calls through the internet is significantly more efficient.
However, that does not look like being the end of the progress made by VoIP and, if the latest reports are to be believed, it could soon play a role in driving calls made by those on aeroplanes.
It has been revealed that passengers flying with Virgin Atlantic will soon be able to use a new system to make calls to the ground, despite being more than 30,000 feet in the air. At first, only six people will be able to use the telephony connection and it will not be in use during take-off or landing. But the fact it is due to come into regular service might be seen as a huge boost for the industry.
Only last month, IMS Research found that wireless internet is likely to become an increasingly common feature of flights, potentially leading the way towards VoIP being used by passengers on all commercial planes.
The business benefits of this could be huge, with traders and commercial experts able to stay in touch with their offices and partners even while they are in the air. The Virgin Atlantic scheme will be rolled out on the operator's London to New York route to begin with.
It will be available on the airline's Airbus A330 aircraft and is largely aimed at business travellers but will be offered to all passengers, no matter what the reason behind their trip is. VoIP could well be ready to make a dramatic arrival in yet another market.
