The business broadband market in the UK has taken a huge step forwards as BT has confirmed the country's first Fibre to the Premises connection has been installed and is now up and running at an office block in Milton Keynes.

Acorn House in the Buckinghamshire town is the setting of the historic roll-out, with multiple office units located within the development due to benefit from the project. The new internet connections will offer download speeds of up to 100 Mbps, with uploading due to run at 15 Mbps.

BT noted there are many advantages associated with the use of the technology, including the potential for companies to drive efficiency and reduce costs, while productivity could also receive a boost. As such, firms around the nation are sure to be keen to see their premises hooked up to the latest solutions as soon as possible.

The work at Acorn House is just a small part of a £2.5 billion project being run by BT with the aim of increasing broadband speeds in Britain. Following its success, many more destinations could enjoy similar fibre technology.

Lisa Ravenscroft, head of fibre broadband and value-added services at BT Business, said: "We are at the forefront of the fibre revolution for businesses in the UK and this is a real milestone in being able to provide the best technology to all types of customer. Fibre to the Premises offers super-fast speed for both uploading and downloading. It's ideal for data-intensive work."

BT has previously spoken of its plans to provide broadband speeds of up to 300 Mbps by next spring.

Its determination and ability to deliver in this area could make it easier for companies across the UK to enjoy the benefits of fast broadband and all manner of associated solutions - including VoIP - for many years to come.
