Businesspeople who access Wi-Fi connections around the country in order to use mobile voice over internet protocol (VoIP) solutions have been given a boost by BT.

The telecommunications firm has announced that the number of hotspots around the UK and Ireland has now passed 3.5 million.

This makes the BT network one of the largest in the world, with in excess of 380,000 hotspots in London and another 25,000 in Birmingham and Leeds.

Some six million customers are in a position to access the connections, which provide internet coverage on the go and could be ideal for running applications such as VoIP.

John Petter, managing director of consumer at BT, said: "Our free apps for the Apple, Android and now BlackBerry devices make getting online even easier and have already proved a huge hit with over 900,000 downloads."

The company recently said it has also made significant process with its fibre to the cabinet and fibre to the premises internet connections.
