Businesses running web-based technology – such as voice over internet protocol (VoIP) solutions – have been handed a boost by news of future developments from BT.

The company has confirmed progress has been made with both its fibre to the premises (FTTP) and fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) links.

Successful trials of its FTTP service have been carried out in St Agnes, Cornwall, where recipients enjoyed extra-fast broadband and BT hopes the technology will soon be on offer in all fibre-enabled areas.

A new, faster FTTC will also be produced and should be available from this spring.

Olivia Garfield, chief executive of Openreach, said of FTTP: "Essentially, it could make our fastest speeds available wherever we deploy fibre. This will be welcome news for small businesses who may wish to benefit from the competitive advantage that such speeds provide."

BT last week revealed it is aiming to make broadband speeds of 300 Megabits per second available in some parts of the UK by next spring.
