Britons who have invested in voice over internet protocol (VoIP) phones for their personal use may currently be enjoying the best service they have ever received.

That is because broadband speeds in residential properties around the country have got 22 per cent faster in the last year, according to the latest statistics from Ofcom.

An average speed of 7.6 Megabits per second (Mbps) was recorded in November 2011, up from 6.2 Mbps exactly a year earlier.

It was noted that many people have moved to higher-speed packages in that time, with 58 per cent said to have signed up to a deal that offers a headline speed of more than 10 Mbps.

Ofcom chief executive Ed Richards said: "It is encouraging that speeds are increasing and that consumers have a real choice of broadband service."

Dr Graeme Codrington, a futurist at Tomorrowtoday.uk.com, recently said that VoIP phones will play a key role in the rise of remote working in the years to come.
