There are plenty of reasons that remote working will always appeal to both staff and businesses – and it should become even easier in the future thanks to more widespread use of voice over internet protocol (VoIP) solutions.

Dr Graeme Codrington, a futurist at Tomorrowtoday.uk.com, explained his belief that the home and non-office working market is likely to be driven forwards in the coming years. He noted a number of technologies will help this to become a reality.

And the good news for those employees who are given the opportunity to perform their roles from various locations is that they are sure to benefit significantly, as will their employers.

"Remote workers will definitely feel the benefits of all technologies that allow more flexibility, mobility and virtual connection. Improved bandwidth will allow for the increasing use of video connections - on the VoIP backbone - and this will be quite significant," Dr Codrington stated.

As such, companies that wish to join the remote working revolution may find an investment in VoIP solutions and infrastructure is now considered a must.

The expert went on to remark that cloud computing is another technology of some considerable value and should be implemented, possibly alongside VoIP.

Instant messaging is also an option recommended by Dr Codrington, who said this could overtake email as the "primary business communication tool". He predicted this will be the case by the end of the decade.

By combining various pieces of technology, the mindset of workers will change and many will realise remote working is a great choice for their careers.

A recent survey conducted by WhichVoIP found that the use of VoIP solutions around the world is on the up and is likely to remain so. It said 75 per cent of all international calls from the US are now made via the technology.
