It is now vital that companies have access to the latest superfast business broadband connections if they are to succeed in a commercial environment.

The north-east of England has become the latest region to be warned of the potential damage done by not investing in the best internet on offer.

According to the Northern Echo, the broadband plans of several local authorities are in trouble and failure to see them through could cost millions of pounds in lost government cash.

Five areas – Darlington, Middlesbrough, Cleveland, Redcar and Stockton-On-Tees – have received initial backing from Westminster for their proposals to take money to use on improving web speeds.

But other spots, including Newcastle and Sunderland, have found their plans faced by a "red light".

Bosses have until the end of February to make a satisfactory bid for government cash, with Ed Vaizey, the broadcasting minister, saying: "We do not intend to continue to fund councils if they continue to fail to deliver."

The Eastern Daily Press told this week how politicians in Norfolk have joined together to back plans to implement broadband upgrades in the East Anglian county.
