Feedback is being sought in Wales on plans that could enhance the performance of voice over internet protocol (VoIP) solutions.

The Welsh government has announced it is looking for market responses on the locations in the country in which it plans to intervene and provide next-generation broadband.

In order to ensure the best possible network for Wales, the Cardiff administration is looking at ways to provide access to superfast connection rates to all residents and businesses by 2015 in conjunction with private sector broadband investment.

Firms may be prompted to invest in VoIP services and technology as the broadband rollout takes place over the coming years, as higher speeds result in better call quality.

Interested parties are being asked to comment on the proposed areas earmarked for intervention in Wales in order to assist the Welsh government in refining its plans in relation to next-generation infrastructure investment from the private sector, with a deadline of February 23rd 2012 set for responses to be received.

"This investment in a first class, globally competitive digital infrastructure will ensure that Wales is at the forefront of the digital economy," stated business minister Edwina Hart.

Writing for the Daily Post, director of CBI Wales Emma Watkins explained that more must be done by the government to ensure the UK communications sector thrives and growth in the industry is maximised.

"A policy framework that encourages investment in content and infrastructure is vital," she stated, welcoming the commitment by the Welsh administration to deliver superfast broadband speeds across the nation by 2015.

Ms Watkins added that the pace of transformation in countries such as South Korea in terms of connection rates means that the UK needs to commit to creating a world-class broadband infrastructure and ensure it remains competitive, as "data clearly has a vital role to play in our modern economy".
