Usain Bolt, the world's fastest man, could inspire people and businesses to invest in superfast broadband that supports the latest technology, such as voice over internet protocol (VoIP) solutions.

The Jamaican sprinter has been confirmed as the new face of Virgin Media and he has dressed up as the brand's founder Sir Richard Branson for a multi-million pound advertising campaign.

Commercials featuring the athlete will air for the first time tomorrow (January 14th) during Take Me Out on ITV1, reported the Guardian.

They will showcase Virgin Media's broadband offerings and the new £110 million project the company unveiled this week, which is designed to double speeds for its users.

Jeff Dodds, executive director of brand and marketing communications at the firm, said: "It is a brilliantly simple idea but the trick was to avoid the obvious sportsman endorsement cliches."

Prime minister David Cameron this week praised Virgin Media's rollout of new, superfast broadband, suggesting it could form the basis of a "smarter economy".
