Businesspeople who use mobile voice over internet protocol (VoIP) solutions and other telecommunications equipment may be boosted by an imminent sale of licences.

Ofcom has revealed it is to put 4G licences – that provide the internet connection on which web-based products can be run over mobile and tablet devices – up for auction.

Operators that manage to acquire the licences will be in a position to offer consumers the technology to stream and download in almost any locations across the UK.

"The proposals will influence the provision of services to consumers for the next decade and beyond," explained Ofcom chief executive Ed Richards.

Plans to sell the licences later this year look likely to benefit people in rural communities the most, as these spots often have inadequate mobile infrastructure.

O2 recently announced it is making a free Wi-Fi hub available to mobile, tablet and computer users in the central London boroughs of Westminster and Kensington and Chelsea.
