A new scheme approved by a local council will result in many firms in Bath enjoying access to superfast business broadband by 2015.

Cabinet members at the local authority met last night (January 11th) to rubber stamp plans for a £2.724 million investment in internet links in the south-west city, reported the Bath Chronicle.

Officers last year rejected the idea of joining a national broadband scheme, claiming it was too expensive, but have now changed their minds after suggesting it is now more cost-effective.

Bath and North East Somerset Council are to contribute about £475,000 towards the total, while further cash is due to be received from the European Regional Development Fund.

Councillor Cherry Beath is quoted as stating: "The cabinet recognises how important that broadband access is for communities and creating the business environment to create jobs with economic prosperity."

Virgin Media this week confirmed it is to upgrade its broadband speeds in the UK in 2012, shortly after BT announced similar intentions.
