Mobile voice over internet protocol (VoIP) solutions could become a hit in Jersey once the island's broadband infrastructure is overhauled.

Speeds of 42 Mbps are due to be available to handset users on the island from April, after the government-owned JT Global confirmed it is to launch an upgrade.

Head of mobile Dave Newbold has told the BBC of the details of the scheme, which will include spending £500,000 on development of infrastructure.

"The programmes take three months to deploy, it is part of our GigaBit Isles programme to deliver the fastest speeds in the world to Jersey," he stated.

Jersey will be boosted by a new 3G network, which will result in more rapid rates for a smaller investment than 4G.

Once it is up and running, it could provide a suitable platform to get the very best out of mobile VoIP solutions.

Norfolk County Council this week announced it is to launch its Say Yes campaign, designed to win public support for a raft of broadband investments.
