The European Parliament is to benefit from the use of internet protocol (IP) telephony solutions and other technology as part of a significant deal with BT.

According to the telecommunications provider, the political body has awarded it two landmark contracts, with a combined value of up to €120 million (£100 million).

BT is to provide a host of solutions and equipment that will transform the infrastructure of the parliament, allowing it to work more efficiently and with the very latest devices.

It is said that the roll-out of IP telephony solutions and other technology will take place at three main sites in Brussels, Strasbourg and Luxembourg.

As well as the telephony systems due to be installed, the parliament is due to receive videoconferencing, unified communications, internet access, new security upgrades and telepresence.

Luis Alvarez, president for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at BT Global Services, said: "Our extensive portfolio of services and our professional services capabilities were instrumental in winning these deals. Our consultancy and systems integration expertise is increasingly recognised in the industry."

Meanwhile, a representative for the European Parliament suggested the package put on the table by BT is a strong and competitive one and will be integrated in accordance with its Call for Tender specifications.

"This makes me confident that we have chosen the right partner, who will help our organisation to become more efficient and reduce costs," the spokesperson stated.

In addition to the telecommunications overhaul at the European Parliament, BT will implement business broadband multiplexers.

Earlier this month, CLSA Asia Pacific Markets, the largest investment and brokerage group in Asia, signed a £45 million deal with BT in order to improve its communications set-up.

This included the arrival of voice services and software, as well as data and compliance solutions as part of a fully-managed platform.
