Firms in north Lincolnshire could soon be enjoying the advantages of running voice over internet protocol (VoIP) solutions, as new broadband infrastructure is due to be developed in the region.

According to This is Scunthorpe, approximately 30,000 buildings in the region are due to receive superfast connections during 2012.

BT has confirmed it will run upgrades in Scunthorpe and Brigg, as part of its £2.5 billion scheme that is due to be rolled out across the UK.

"This is superb news and couldn't have come at a better time," explained North Lincolnshire Council member Liz Redfern.

"It proves that there is a business case for commercial infrastructure suppliers to invest in this area," she added.

The council is said to have been running a campaign to bring superfast broadband to the area, as it is sure to benefit both local residents and companies, perhaps by allowing them to use VoIP solutions more effectively.

According to a recent report by the BBC, councils in the UK have until February to apply for government funding to pay for new superfast broadband in their area.
