A growing number of Australians have been investing in voice over internet protocol (VoIP) solutions, according to the latest statistics from the country.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has revealed that more people in the nation are investing in mobile phones and ditching landlines.

Another key trend is the rise of VoIP, with internet-based telecommunications service said to have increased by 31 per cent in the year to June 30th.

In total, 3.8 million people in the country had a VoIP set-up half way through this year.

ACMA chairman Chris Chapman said the take-up of alternative communication tools is the result of Australians attempting to find the solutions that best suit their professional needs.

"This is most evident in the increased adoption of VoIP, mobiles, the internet and other specific communication channels," he stated.

Larry Hettick, principal analyst at Current Analysis, recently told Network World that VoIP is an area in which mid-sized firms can look to grow over the coming months and years.
