Belfast looks set to become a business broadband leader, after George Osborne announced a £100 million fund for the city and three others in the UK.

According to the local Telegraph newspaper, Belfast will benefit from both BT and Virgin Media committing to providing better services of up to 100Mbps.

Arlene Foster, enterprise minister, said the economy will be helped by efforts to strengthen infrastructure in preparation for the change.

"This will encourage new businesses to flourish in key creative industries requiring super-connectivity and allow home-grown businesses to compete globally," she explained.

Ms Foster also encouraged other cities under the scheme, including Londonderry, Newry and Lisburn, to think about their future telecommunications ambitions and ensure they participate fully in boosting their commercial prospects.

The Daily Echo recently reported that a government scheme in Hampshire could be set to help businesses in the region, with £5.3 million worth of funding being allocated to improving internet connections for 91,000 homes and businesses.
