Businesses and professionals in Hampshire with voice over internet protocol (VoIP) solutions to their name might be set to benefit from a major investment.

Councils in the county are considering providing £5.3 million in funding, which would be matched by a government scheme, reported the Daily Echo.

It is believed that Hampshire County Council would stump up £2.5 million of the total, while Southampton and Portsmouth authorities plus a host of district bodies would contribute £2.8 million between them.

The intended result is a significant improvement in broadband connections for 91,000 homes and businesses in the area, which could be a boost for those running VoIP solutions.

Councillor Keith House, leader of Eastleigh Borough Council, said: "I support this scheme as it will help competitiveness of business."

The Cotswold Journal this week told how the Borders Broadband project has been set up in Gloucestershire with the aim of bringing super-fast internet to the region.
