The use of mobile voice over internet protocol (VoIP) solutions and other internet-based telephony systems could be set to rocket in Africa, if the latest findings are anything to go by.

Research body Frost & Sullivan has predicted that the use of mobile, broadband and internet services is set to rocket between 2010 and 2015.

Looking specifically at South Africa, Tanzania, Congo, Lesotho, Mozambique, Uganda and Nigeria, the organisation put the combined number of internet subscribers at 29.8 million in 2010 and suggested it will rise to 77.5 million in three years' time.

"The growth of mobile voice and internet markets in Africa is expected to be driven primarily by a decline in retail price for these services," explained the organisation's information and communication technologies industry analyst Vitalis Ozianyi.

Bizcommunity.com recently reported that significant upgrades to broadband links in South Africa has led to a surge in demand for VoIP solutions.
