The voice over internet protocol (VoIP) hardware market has a significant opportunity when it comes to security.

Jonathan Greenwood, managing director at snom UK, writing for CRN, explained that while many users of IT systems are keen to implement adequate protection for their solutions, it can be a "different story" for VoIP.

He said there is a need to educate VoIP users about any potential security vulnerabilities that exist within the technology and how they can nullify these threats.

Mr Greenwood predicted that IP telephony will become a much more popular commercial option over the years to come, so ensuring its security should now be a priority for all concerned.

The threat posed by hackers remains strong for users of many types of technology and VoIP hardware owners must be switched on to the issue by installing strong security measures.

A large installation of IP telephony and other communications equipment was recently carried out by BT at 25 of the venues due to host events in next year's Olympic Games.
