A raft of communications infrastructure – including VoIP hardware – has been installed at the venue's for next year's Olympic Games in London.

BT has confirmed it has delivered a significant quantity of technology to 25 of the locations for the sporting jewel, which is due to begin in July 2012.

A cloud-based voice network is one of the key features of the system and will help bosses at each of the venues communicate with each other.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) and Paralympic Games commissioned the work, which has been completed by BT in its role as an official communications services partner.

Organisers have been sure to test the relevant software on a number of warm-up events and are confident it will stand up to the rigours of providing the backbone to the Games.

Indeed, preparations for the communications infrastructure, including VoIP hardware, have been underway since May.

In total, some 16,500 handsets are to be deployed across all 94 of the sites that are playing a part in the Olympics.

Gerry Parnell, chief information officer of LOCOG, said: "Preparing for the London 2012 Games requires enormous flexibility and scalability to deliver to the organising committee's demanding operational requirements."

Stuart Hill, BT vice-president for central government and London 2012, added that millions of calls, texts and emails are to be supported at the time of the Games by BT's technology and systems.

"As part of making London 2012 the most connected Games ever, our hosted voice services are perfect for LOCOG because they provide the ability to grow quickly," the executive stated.

The London Games are due to get underway on July 27th before running for more than two weeks and will be based around the new Olympic Stadium in Stratford, in the east of the English capital.
