Telecoms specialist AT&T has developed a new VoIP solutions app that will allow its customers to make cheap international phone calls using their smartphones.

The app is available for multiple smartphone operating systems including iOS, Android and BlackBerry's own mobile platform.

Known as the AT&T Call International app, the software was developed by 8x8 and is expected to fill the gap left by Skype, one of the VoIP solutions that AT&T does not support.

International call charges made using the app vary from nation to nation, with a call to China costing four cents (2.5p) per minute, while Indian collect calls cost nine cents per minute.

The app is geared towards people who travel, as they will be able to use their free minutes domestically and make VoIP calls when they are overseas.

Mobile VoIP solutions are rapidly growing in popularity, the annual revenue generated from the technology is expected to reach $36 billion by 2016, according to industry expert Visiongain.
