Virgin Media has claimed that a third of the UK can now access its 100Mb speeds, meaning business broadband customers could be better connected than ever if they choose to go with the provider.

The ultrafast fibre optic broadband is now available to some 20 million people in areas such as Solihull, Birmingham, Lincoln and Seven Kings, and plans to expand are still on track.

Virgin Media's executive director of broadband Jon James said the company was "very proud" of the development.

However, he reiterated the need for other ISPs to live up to their advertised speed claims.

"Delivering faster speeds so that consumers can enjoy all the benefits of this rapidly growing connected world is not enough if the industry doesn’t deliver on its marketing claims," he added.

Mr James suggested potential benefits of the 100Mb service could be access to better online services and digital entertainment, as well as excellent foundations for business growth and start-ups.

The news comes after a Liberal Democrat MP in Scotland called for better business broadband infrastruture north of the border.

Edinburgh West's Mike Crockart said there remains inequality in the country between those who can receive quality service and those who cannot.
