Fibre-optic business broadband is essential if UK companies are to prosper in these tough economic times, it has been claimed.

Secretary of state for culture, Olympics, media and sport Jeremy Hunt said that both consumers and commercial organisations need access to a high-speed internet connection going forward.

He made the claim after BT announced that up to two-thirds of UK premises will have access to fibre broadband by the end of 2014, which is a year ahead of schedule.

Mr Hunt praised the company for the work it is doing and said the whole country will benefit from the infrastructure improvements.

"With access to superfast broadband UK businesses will have the infrastructure they need to grow and develop new products and services," he added.

BT was recently chosen to oversee the communications infrastructure being implemented at the National Football Centre in Burton-on-Trent, with business broadband a possible inclusion in the plans.
