Firms in Cornwall will soon be able to benefit from the arrival of super-fast business broadband, which is said to be running ahead of schedule.

Indeed, the latest reports suggest the technology will be in place some three months before its predicted installation date.

BT, the European Union, Cornwall Council and the Cornwall Development Company have teamed up to organise the implementation of high-quality telecommunications links in nine areas of the county.

Commenting, Chris Ridgers, portfolio holder for economy and regeneration at Cornwall Council, said: "This is great news – it will give local businesses a much deserved boost and help the economy of South East Cornwall at a crucial time of the year."

Some 130,000 km of optical fibre is being laid in Cornwall, 500 roadside cabinets are being installed and 100 telephone exchanges are in the process of being upgraded.

BBC Scotland recently told how about 4,000 companies and homes had enjoyed a broadband boost in the Borders region, with the town of Kelso becoming the first location north of the border to benefit from BT's roll-out of the latest technology.
