A Scottish town has received a business broadband boost after becoming the first in the country to benefit from BT's roll-out of next generation internet services.

Some 4,000 companies and homes in Kelso, on the Scottish borders, now have access to faster connections, while the nearby town of Keebles has also been earmarked for an upgrade over the course of the coming months, BBC Scotland reports.

Those in the area can now take advantage of speeds of up 20 megabits per second, which is more than double the maximum limited previously available to the majority of homes in the UK.

Brendan Dick, director of BT Scotland, said: "By next spring, almost 1.4 million Scottish homes and businesses will be served by an exchange that has been upgraded to deliver these higher speeds."

According to BT, the fastest business broadband on offer in the UK can currently be found in the Northern Irish destination of Londonderry following a huge upgrade of the city's infrastructure and cables.
