Firms may wish to turn to VoIP solutions after being advised that cutting down on power usage in order to save money is a wise move.

Andrew Boddington, director of marketing at Return on IT, said it can pay off to carry out a thorough examination of an existing set-up and plot ways to become more efficient.

"Have they servers running at below optimum capacity? Can they combine workloads on to fewer servers or even go for virtualisation?" he asked.

One option may be to dispose of communications solutions and replace them with VoIP, which is a green and cost-effective option for getting in touch with others.

However, when doing so, it is important to remove existing technology in accordance with waste electrical and electronic equipment guidelines, Mr Boddington noted.

Infonetics Research recently predicted that the VoIP market is set to boom over the coming years, with a 17 per cent growth expected in 2011.
