Business owners considering an investment in VoIP systems may be wondering how to get the most for their money.

When faced with potential problems surrounding latency and jitter, it may be advisable to seek expert opinion on the matter.

In a recent column for Internet Evolution, commentator Mary Shacklett set out her top tips for newcomers to VoIP solutions.

To ensure quality of service, she advised ensuring adequate IT equipment is in place and made particular note of routers, switches and hubs.

However, Ms Shacklett also highlighted the importance of optimising network architectures for VoIP and suggested using separate networks for data and voice could improve performance in this area.

"We made the switch to segregated voice and data networks and really noticed a difference in the increase of call volume," she quoted one client as stating.

Trefor Davies, council member for the Internet Telephony Service Providers' Association, recently claimed VoIP systems could enable businesses to make significant savings on communication.
