Volunteers have been called for to sign up for a comprehensive test of broadband speeds across Europe.

The European Commission has initiated a project to measure the performance of internet connections across European Union member states and has contracted specialist firm SamKnows to carry out the study.

Results will be available to regulators, broadband service providers and the public once completed and 10,000 volunteers are being sought to take part in the research.

Commenting on the study, Alex Salter, chief executive officer for SamKnows, highlighted the many parties who these findings could be set to benefit.

"We are working to provide ISPs, regulators and, most importantly, consumers with the information they need to push for improved broadband services," he said.

Mr Salter added that volunteers will be "champions" for better internet across Europe.

This comes after the ITU Global Symposium for Regulators set out a range of best practice guidelines for worldwide broadband connectivity.
