BT has announced the progress of its initiative to supply homes in the UK with superfast, fibre-optic broadband.

The company revealed that 400,000 homes and businesses in London are set to benefit from improved connection speeds within the coming weeks.

Areas such as Primrose Hill, South Clapham and Clerkenwell are among the 30 exchange areas that will enjoy the advantages of fast broadband.

BT explained that this latest milestone will provide high-quality internet connections to 1.8 million premises in London, with another 700,000 targeted for the roll-out during 2012.

Duncan Ingram, regional director for BT in London, claimed fibre-optic broadband will "transform" the experience of using the internet.

"Fast and reliable internet connections are an essential part of our national infrastructure," he said.

Last week, BT was forced to alter two of its broadband adverts by the Advertising Standards Authority following complaints from Virgin Media, which claimed they could mislead consumers.
