The number of consumers utilising VoIP hardware on their media tablets could be set to soar, new figures have revealed.

Data recently released by the International Data Corporation (IDC) indicates that shipments for this type of device rose by 88.9 per cent last quarter.

Indeed, it noted a 303.8 per cent increase when compared with figures from the same period last year.

The IDC cited "robust demand" for the Apple iPad 2 as one of the driving factors, with Research In Motion's PlayBook also grabbing a significant market share.

Commenting on the findings, Tom Mainelli, research director for mobile connected devices, claimed his organisation forecasts this trend to continue.

"We expect shipment totals to continue to grow in the third and fourth quarter, as additional vendors introduce more price-competitive Android products into the market," he said.

Earlier in the week, IDC figures showed that the number of worldwide PC shipments had seen slow growth last quarter.
