BT has received criticism from one of its industry peers over supposed attempts to build a monopoly around fibre-optic broadband.

According to a Guardian report, the commercial director for internet service provider TalkTalk David Goldie warned that permitting the company to achieve this aim could have detrimental consequences.

He suggested that this could lead to a system of infrastructure that would be inferior to those boasted by other nations.

Mr Goldie claimed that BT is constantly thinking about how to recover its market dominance.

"I don't think that is going to represent good value for the British taxpayer," he added.

The industry figure went on to claim that the bidding process has favoured BT, noting that no-one outside the company has knowledge of what its prices are to be set at.

This comes after an ISPreview.co.uk survey found that many internet users harboured concerns about the speed at which they can upload data.
