Broadband is something that an increasing number of UK households now have access to.

That is according to the Office for National Statistics, which in its Internet Access - Households and Individuals, 2011 report indicated that 77 per cent of homes now have an internet connection, an improvement on 2010's figures of 73 per cent.

It noted that just two per cent of these used a dial-up connection, stating that broadband has "now almost entirely replaced" it.

Findings showed that 93 per cent access the internet in this way, in comparison to 84 per cent four years ago.

However, progress may still need to be made as it stated: "Despite the growth in household Internet connections over recent years, there were still 5.7 million households which were without an Internet connection."

This follows recent comments made to the Daily Telegraph by director of broadbandchoices.co.uk Michael Phillips, suggesting that remote areas without broadband access are often the "most in need" of it.
