Broadband provision is something that the government and internet service providers (ISPs) should join together for, in order to improve the connectivity of the nation.

That is according to product director for Broadbandchoices.co.uk Michael Phillips, who stated that in order for the most effective results to be achieved, it is important that it is a collaborative effort.

"The government should work out the economic tests for investing in local area broadband projects, setting aside a fund that broadband providers can tender to provide the services for a given area," he said.

Mr Phillips added that free broadband is unlikely to be something that is introduced, although it is possible that people could only be required to pay for call charges in future.

This follows recent comments made by scientist, broadcaster and university lecturer Toby Murcott to the Hereford Times suggesting that the rollout of high-speed broadband in the region would offer "immeasurable" advantages.
