The Scottish government has expressed its disappointment at the £68.8 million grant announced by the Department of Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport to upgrade broadband infrastructure in the country.

Earlier this week, culture secretary Jeremy Hunt revealed the funding package designed to accelerate the rollout of super-fast broadband across the UK.

However, Scottish cabinet secretary for infrastructure and capital investment Alex Neil stated that the money will not go far enough to deliver broadband services to the majority of the country.

"I am disappointed with the allocation from the UK government towards the Scottish government's ambition for rollout of next generation broadband across the whole of Scotland," he said.

Mr Neil went on to add that Holyrood will commit some of its own funds to help address the shortfall and deliver super-fast broadband to all parts of Scotland.

Michael Phillips, product director at Broadbandchoices.co.uk, said recently that broadband technology is essential for those attending university.
