In these difficult economic times, small businesses in particular need to take advantage of all the tools that can help them maintain and improve productivity without costing them significant amounts in upfront capital.

One area they could focus on is communications and IP telephony, with several solutions available which can help them grow going forward but not set them back large sums to implement.

VoIP hardware is one of the options small firms can invest in, as they will already have an IT infrastructure in place, meaning it will not cause too much upheaval.

That is the view of James Harper, from Maintel, who wrote for business2community.com that while broadband speeds in the UK are not as fast as those found in other countries, companies can still take advantage of VoIP solutions.

"There are few other uses of bandwidth that make as much sense from the perspective of a small business," he stated.

In a recent post on the snom VoIP Blog, the manufacturer recently claimed that some employees feel reluctant to use VoIP phones as they are different from what they are used to, meaning opting for a physical desktop phone could have its advantages.
