The UK is not among the top ten countries when it comes to high-speed broadband, a new study has found.

Gigaom reports that Akamai's soon-to-be-released State of the Internet paper shows South Korea in first place, followed by Hong Kong and Japan.

The Netherlands is the best performing European nation, finishing in fourth spot, while Romania completes the top five.

European countries dominated the rest of the list, with the Czech Republic, Latvia, Switzerland, Belgium and Ireland taking the remaining top ten places.

In terms of the cities with the fastest broadband connections, Asia accounted for two-thirds of them, with Japan providing 61, the report found.

Ernest Doku, technology expert at uSwitch.com, said recently that many consumers in the UK are purchasing broadband packages which promise one speed but deliver something else.

He made the claim after research from Ofcom showed that the average speed is around half of what providers say they can achieve.
