Increasing numbers of pensioners are using broadband to communicate with family members, it has been claimed.

Edd Dawson, editor of broadband.co.uk, stated that many silver surfers have a Facebook account which they use to stay in touch with their grandchildren.

He said that the number is increasing all the time and this trend is likely to continue going forward.

"As families get more disparate, more and more of the older generation are using the internet to keep in touch with members of their family all over the world," Mr Dawson noted.

The expert went on to add that elderly citizens represent a growth area in terms of broadband use and while there are those who refuse to accept it, the internet is an integral part of people's lives young and old.

According to a survey conducted by MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, 22 per cent of over 60s use social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.
