Nearly three-quarters of adults in the UK have a home broadband connection, new research has found.

According to the Media Literacy in the Nations study by Ofcom, 74 per cent of those over the age of 16 have broadband in their household, with 76 per cent stating that they had some form of domestic internet connection.

More than eight out of ten respondents said they use the web on a regular basis, with the average consumer spending 9.4 hours a week online.

Those in England are the most enthusiastic, dedicating 9.6 hours per week to their online activities, followed by people in Northern Ireland with 9.1 hours and Wales and Scotland with 8.4 and 8.3 hours respectively.

Michael Phillips, product director at Broadbandchoices.co.uk, said recently that there are a number of steps consumers can take to boost their broadband speed.

Among them are contacting the internet service provider if the connection appears too slow and keeping the router away from other devices which emit a wireless signal.
