Businesses must separate essential tools such as VoIP hardware and important communication devices from technology which is desirable but not critical to their operations.

That is according to Andrew Boddington, director of marketing at Return on IT, who noted that this is one of the key area companies should focus on when trying to make the transition to becoming a more environmentally-friendly organisation.

"Have a plan for who you're going to have working and the equipment that is needed and really decide on what is necessary and what is nice to have - clearly separate the two," he stated.

Mr Boddington went on to add that many businesses have scaled back their green ambitions in the wake of the economic downturn, however, the expert believes that taking steps to reduce a firm's environmental impact can have a positive impact on its bottom line.

The North East Chamber of Commerce said recently that high-speed broadband is something commercial organisations must have if they are to be successful going forward.
